PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CREATED BY EDUCATORS FOR EDUCATORS
Edcamp Urban is a new FREE professional development user-generated
conference - commonly referred to as an “unconference".
Organized by K12 educators and participant-driven, Edcamp Urban is open to all educators and created and facilitated by participants on the day of.
Urban educators can connect with like-minded individuals, collaborate ideas, brainstorm solutions to common education problems, and have group discussions.
Edcamp Urban is unique because of the challenges we face in our urban school districts. Urban schools share some unique physical and demographic characteristics that differentiate them from suburban and rural school districts. Urban schools operate in densely populated areas serving significantly more students.
In comparison to suburban and rural districts, urban school districts are frequently marked by higher concentrations of poverty, greater racial and ethnic diversity, larger concentrations of immigrant populations and linguistic diversity, and more frequent rates of student mobility.
As educators we need to bridge the gap between our counterparts in suburban and rural school districts in order to best serve our student population and expose them to the best learning experience possible.
Educational technology is also a common topic area for Edcamp Urban, as are pedagogy, practical examples in instructional use of modern tools, and solving the problems technology can introduce into the classroom environment.
Sessions at Edcamp Urban are diverse and eclectic because they grow out of the interests and expertise of the participants.
Most sessions are informal conversations or demonstrations. It's common for many different people to take the floor during an event to share an idea, show student work, or ask questions.
Edcampers are energized and receive information, tips and techniques that can immediately be applied in the classroom.
